Stop Believing the DUPR Myths - Here are 7 reasons why!!!
Pickleball players love talking about ratings - and few spark more debate than DUPR (Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating).
At clubs, leagues, and tournaments, you’ll often hear players confidently explaining how DUPR works…only to repeat myths that aren’t true.
The reality is that DUPR is a performance-based algorithm, not just a simple win–loss tracker. That means many of the common assumptions players make about ratings can be wrong.
Here are seven of the most common DUPR myths - and the truth behind them.
Myth #1: “If I Win, My DUPR Will Go Up”
This is the most common misunderstanding in pickleball.
DUPR doesn’t just look at whether you won, it looks at how you performed compared to the expected result.
Example:
Expected result: 11–4 win
Actual result: 11–9 win
Even though you won the match, the system may interpret that as underperforming, which could cause your rating to drop slightly.
The truth: Winning isn’t enough - you need to beat the expected score.
Myth #2: “If I Lose, My Rating Always Goes Down”
This myth surprises a lot of players.
If you lose a match but perform better than the predicted score, your rating can actually increase.
Example:
Expected result: Lose 11–3
Actual result: Lose 11–9
In this case, the algorithm sees you as playing above expectation.
The truth: Close losses against stronger players canhelp your rating.
Myth #3: “Playing Stronger Players Is Bad for My Rating”
Some players avoid stronger competition because they think it will hurt their DUPR.
In reality, playing stronger opponents often creates the biggest opportunity for rating improvement.
Why?
- Upset wins create large rating jumps
- Close losses still show strong performance
The truth: Challenging stronger players is often thefastest path to a higher rating.
Myth #4: “Only Tournament Matches Matter”
Tournaments certainly carry weight, but they are not the only matches that influence DUPR.
Matches from:
- leagues
- ladders
- club play
- organised DUPR sessions
…can all count toward your rating.
The truth: Consistent match recording in structured play helps build amore accurate rating.
Myth #5: “Point Margins Don’t Matter”
Some players assume DUPR only cares about wins and losses.
In reality, point differential is a key factor.
For example:
- Winning 11–2 vs a lower-rated opponent signals dominance
- Winning 11–9 may suggest the match was closer than expected
The truth: Every point in a match contributes to how the algorithm evaluates performance.
Myth #6: “Playing With a Lower-Rated Partner Won’t Affect Me”
In doubles, DUPR evaluates the team rating, which is typically influenced by both players.
If a high-rated player partners with someone significantly lower-rated, the system adjusts the expected score accordingly.
If the team doesn’t win convincingly, the stronger player’s rating can suffer.
The truth: Your partner’s rating does matter.
Myth #7: “DUPR Is Just Random”
When ratings move unexpectedly, it’s easy to assume the system is random.
But DUPR is actually built on statistical modelling that compares:
- player ratings
- expected match results
- actual scores
- historical match data
What seems random is often just the algorithm responding to performance relative to expectations.
The truth: DUPR is complex, but it’s not arbitrary.
The Real Key 🗝️ to Understanding DUPR
Once you understand how DUPR (Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating) evaluates matches, one idea becomes clear:
It’s not about protecting your rating - it’s about consistently outperforming expectations.
Players who improve their ratings the fastest tend to:
-
- play lots of matches 😁
- challenge stronger opponents
- win convincingly when expected
- keep losses competitive
And in the end, that approach doesn’t just improve your rating - it improves your game.
